Public Service Broadcasting Day 2019: Prasar Bharati Chairman’s Message

The day also marks the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji

The Day is observed every year across India on November 12 year to commemorate first and last visit of Mahatma Gandhi of All India Radio Studio, New Delhi in 1947. On this occasion, artistes of Akashvani Bhawan, Delhi performed Vaishnav Jan Toh and other bhajans and school children performed sangeet etc.

A function will be organized at the premises of All India Radio in New Delhi to mark the great occasion Public Service Broadcasting Day. Conveying his best wishes to millions of listeners of All India Radio, on Public Service Broadcasting day on Nov 12, Prasar Bharati Chairman Dr. A Surya Prakash has mentioned that, “It is a important day in the history as Mahatma Gandhi Ji visited the AIR studio. The day also marks the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji“.

Dr. A Surya Prakash, Prasar Bharati Chairman remarked that, “Prasar Bharati has been given the responsibility of public service broadcasting, deepen the democratic traditions and provide opportunities to all diverse communities and cultures. He reiterated that Prasar Bharati will continue to strive to do that for the people”.

Significantly, Mahatma Gandhi ji had visited AIR studio to address displaced people from Pakistan who were temporarily settled in Kurukshetra, Haryana after partition of Indian subcontinent. It was his first and last live broadcast. In this broadcast, He had decided to convey his message through radio, as he couldn’t visit refugees of Partition stationed at Kurukshetra in Haryana.

This day was instituted in 2000 as Jan Prasaran Diwas (Public Service Broadcasting Day) after it was conceptualised by Suhas Borker, Convenor of Jan Prasar. It seeks to spread Gandhi’s belief that aim of media was public service. Accordingly, he used to run several newspapers and understood power of media.
