World earth day 2019: “Protect Our Species”

Every year, April 22nd, popularly celebrated as “World Earth Day”, The day dedicated towards the betterment of our environment. Conserving natural resources to create a “Greener Earth” is the need of the world. Stating that people will remain complete in landfills and not break down, or wash into rivers and seas and kill innocent wildlife. Further, as we quoted today, “Save Species and forest- Save Earth, Save water and Environmental resources- Save Earth, Save Girl Child- Save Societal Environment for earth”.

Historically, On 22nd April 2009 the United Nation general assembly adopted a resolution declaring 22nd April as the “International Mother Earth Day”. Such resolution was adopted to reaffirm the agenda of sustainable development and also to acknowledge the role of earth as a mother, who sustains and nurtures all the species, including humans, animals and plants. Notably, The resolution was introduced by the unitary plurinational state of Bolivia and it was supported by 50 other member states of the United Nations.

The unprecedented global destruction and rapid reduction of plant and wildlife populations are directly linked to causes driven by human activity: climate change, deforestation, habitat loss, trafficking and poaching, unsustainable agriculture, pollution and pesticides to name a few. The impacts are far reaching.

This year, World Earth Day theme is “Protect Our Species”. It will mainly focus on saving species which are on the verge of extinction due climate change, deforestation, pollution and illegal poaching. While the term “Mother Earth” implies the interdependent relationship which exists between all the species of planet earth and to acknowledge earth’s role in sustaining them all. Greatly, In the last year, World Earth Day theme was ‘End Plastic Pollution’, a huge issue that has recently had a large amount of attention. Such theme is dedicated to giving people the information they need to think about, and fundamentally change, the way they use plastics.

Now a day, everything is being packed in the plastic bags or given in it by the shopkeepers. Plastic bags productions are increasing day by day which is very shameful condition for us as these materials are undegradable.

Only three years ago, on Earth Day 2016, the Paris Agreement was signed by 194 states and the European Union. Such Agreement aims to respond to growing concerns around the threat of climate change by implementing plans to improve food waste management, lower the use of fossil fuels, make vehicles more ecological to run and other methods of protecting the environment.

Importantly, Our Earth is the only planet in the Universe where life is possible till date. Hence, it is very important to maintain the natural assets of the earth in order to continue the life on the earth. Thus, The 22nd of April has been marked as an Earth Day to make the human race get aware about the significance of their planet. The Earth is in danger, and climate change has been confirmed as very real, most of the scientists saying that we are to blame. By becoming more eco-friendly, and taking steps to protect the environment, we can hopefully ensure that the devastating effects we have had on the planet can be halted, if not reversed.

As per official inputs, “International Mother Earth Day” is aimed at sharing responsibilities and setting agendas for a peaceful coexistence with nature. There is reason behind the title of this celebration as “Earth Day”. Also, Earth Day Network, the organisation which spreads awareness on environmental issues across the globe will organize various events to raise awareness on the saving the endangered species of the world. It will urge people to say no to herbicides and pesticides and follow a plant based diet.

On this day, Several Environmental activists has organize various processions and hold rallies on the occasion to spread the awareness about saving our planet and making it the best planet to live. Focus will also be made on fighting climate change, deforestation, pollution and protecting endangered species. Significantly, NASA, the international space agency, also celebrated the World Earth Day by organizing a photo contest with hash tag #PictureEarth.

Following the reports, One of the big examples of it is the depletion of the Ozone layer which prevents us from the ultra violet rays of the sun. Another big problem of the environment is death of rivers by getting mixed with the industrial toxic materials which leads to the global warming. Increasing industrialization on daily basis leads to deforestation which ultimately leads to the rise in Earth temperature. These are the life ending dangers on the earth forever which can be lessens through the small steps such as new trees plantation, inhibiting the deforestation, limiting the vehicles use to reduce air pollution, enhancing the energy conservation through reducing the unnecessary use of electricity.

Such small steps become a big step if taken care by the people worldwide together. Various steps have been taken by the governments of many countries towards the safety of earth by implementing the variety of legal rules. A group of environmental leaders organize various events and campaigns to celebrate the earth day. A big crowd of the people gets together from 141 countries to solve the environmental issues by implementing variety of useful measures.

Despite the same, The founder of the Earth Day named, Gaylord Nelson, has chosen this day (22nd of April) to increase the awareness among common public, especially among youngsters to get full effect of the campaign of environmental safety. He had selected this day by keeping things in mind that there would not be any disturbances of the exams for the students or any fairs and festival for the common public, so that everyone could pay their full attention towards this event celebration. Thus, we have to protect our Species, water and natural resources. To teach people that every day of their life is earth day, so they should take care of the earth on daily basis and Motivate people to reduce the use of plastic bags to avoid the soil and water pollution.

Quoted here, Nature’s gifts to our planet are the species that we know and love, along with the many more that we have yet to discover. Unfortunately, we have upset the balance of nature and the world is facing the greatest rate of extinction since we lost the dinosaurs more than 60 million years ago. But unlike the fate of the dinosaurs, the rapid extinction of species today is the result of human activity. Our planet is truly thriving with living things. Some we are familiar with and others we have never heard of. There are so many! And estimates keep changing. “Scientists generally agree that many more species exist than are formally described, but they disagree about how many there really are. The most recent study, published in 2017, estimates that there are roughly 2 billion living species on Earth, over a thousand times more than the current number of described species.”1 The graph below shows a breakdown of those species: Protect Our Species Primer and Action Toolkit.
